Pres. Obama delivered the opening remarks at a White House Tribal Nations Conference and participated in a discussion with leaders from the 564 federally recognized tribes. The conference is addressing issues facing American Indian tribes such as economic development, housing and education. This is the first such meeting since 1994.

White House announces Tribal Nations Summit Washington, D.C.,
November 5, 2009.
Federally recognized tribes are invited to send one tribal leader to attend the meeting on November 5th, 2009. To RSVP, please call 202-456-3779 NCAI will be holding a planning meeting prior to the summit. More information on this meeting will be announced here shortly.

Please call 202 456 3779 for security requirements applicable to President Obama meeting with Tribes. It is my understanding that only one tribal leader will be allowed a representative per tribe. However, please register at least two alternate delegates in the event a tribal leader cannot make it to ensure each tribe is represented. Tribes will not be allowed in to meet with the president without security clearance which must be done in advance.

Unprecedented event reflects administration commitment to Indian Country

Secretary of labor to host tribal leaders at U.S. Department of Labor Nov. 4, 2009
WASHINGTON - As a prelude to the White House Tribal Nations Conference the following day, on Wednesday, Nov. 4, Secretary Hilda L. Solis will host tribal leaders at the U.S. Department of Labor. Invitations are being extended to representatives of the 564 federally recognized tribes across the United States. "This first-of-its-kind meeting will further ongoing collaboration between the Department of Labor and tribal nations," said Secretary Solis. "I look forward to integrating this priority into each of the department's agencies, which will focus on building meaningful relationships that engage the tribes in our ongoing work." At this Labor Department event, in consultation with tribal leaders, Secretary Solis will articulate her vision for economic and workforce development in Indian Country. Attendees also will interact with other high-ranking department officials.
